well i'll swear blind that the only way he could have done this at 50mm is to have knocked a hole in the wall of a bank that's stood there for 120 years -but there you go....
i amble past here almost daily - now that i have the "original" i'll try to re-create accurately next time

but if you look at the building in the background, its much more compressed than in yours which shows the wide angle effect of making things in the background appear even further away.
so could have been a 35mm, he used that a lot too

He was shooting with a 35mm film camera and you shot on a dSLR? Maybe your 24mm is his 50mm.
Very good points....with the x1.6 multiplier that should be applied to my dSLR that 24mm will in reality be 38.5mm
going to find out a a bit more about this image now. One of my friends here is an arts correspondent for a Turkish national, so we're going to delve and find out if we can discover more about the dates, times and anything HCB may have written about it - and pop it into his weekly column.
I'm planning to get some photos of people using the stairs randomly, but also plan to do a re-creation using local people who live in the area now.
could he have shot it from inside the bank while collecting his allowance......
